Jeff Johnson

Jeff, a Principal and Co-Founder of the JL Group, possesses extensive investigative experience. He was a police officer for 29 years with Long Beach PD, retiring as a commander. While there he received the Detective of the Year Award. His executive experience includes managing patrol divisions, investigations, custody, training, juvenile and project management. He has worked numerous and diverse investigative units, including internal affairs. He also trained police officers in the use of force for over 20 years at the police academy and has previously published extensively on the topic. He served as a Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Legal Expert and has helped develop POST curriculum and participated in the annual legal update videos. He has qualified as a court-recognized legal expert witness in the area of police practices and use of force and has testified in several court cases.

He has been a member of the California Bar Association for over 30 years. He attended Southwestern and Taft University Law Schools. He also possesses a Master of Public Administration degree from California State University, Long Beach. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class #185). He is a recipient of the Silver Star for Bravery from the American Police Hall of Fame. He was the Instructor of the Year with the Long Beach Bar Foundation, Shortstop Program, a court diversion program for at-risk juvenile offenders. He volunteered as a Legal Aid Hotline Attorney for several years (Legal Aid Foundation of Orange County) and was honored by the California State Bar for handling the highest number of low-income client intakes for year (2015).

Jeff believes being a superior workplace investigator involves experience and skills beyond simply investigations and interview/interrogation. Advanced communication skills (oral and written), as well as supervisory and management experience is critical to seeing and understanding the big picture, and completing a thorough, concise, and comprehensive investigation.
